Managing Classroom Behavior
Poor study skills and inappropriate classroom behavior are some of the things you have to deal with when you are a teacher. Going through behavior problems is something that most students go through since its part of growing up. For some, it is more severe than others. Special kids can be separated from the regular ones from their behavior. Let’s look at several ways you can manage classroom behavior.
Create behavior expectations and spell them out to the students. At the start of every school year tell the students what you expect. Create states that will keep the students in check from the first day they attend school. The standards should be established together with the students and make sure that they become part of the class. Create signs that become warning signs if someone is in the wrong. Monitor the students to see if they are following the rules.
Keep on checking if anyone has had any adverse reaction and offered them feedback. If you have a student who is continuously having lousy behavior keep a close eye on them and also avoid it at an early stage. If someone has inappropriate practice make sure you respond using gestures and words that are firm so show that they are not following the rules. Rewarding ethical behavior is something you should always do in a classroom.
The practices will be followed if you reinforce then using social, edible, negative, tangible and activity reinforcement. Instead if giving physical reward when someone has good behavior provide those tokens every time they are right. For a later day the tokens can be used as backup reinforcement. But if you are dealing with older students the best reinforce using contingency contracts. The contact should be drafted by you and the student saying that when they behave appropriately they will be rewarded. Shaping is a way that you use to prepare good action in small steps. This technique can either be used to guide new behavior or reinforce the ones that already exist.
Use a role model to explain the sort of behavior you are expecting. When one of the students does something right use them as an example explaining that’s what you want from the rest. In the presence of the other classmates teach a student who has behaved wrongly so that the rest can learn. This way you will be meeting on both sides. The students should take part in the program of improving their behavior by creating goals, preventing situations that could affect their behavior, assessing themselves and knowing how they should be rewarded for their excellent response. The behavior management program should also include the parents.
